Where
do the dogs come from?
Most
of the dogs and puppies are those that are picked
up from the streets or elsewhere, or are dogs
whose owners no longer want them. Since the SPCA
introduced their No-Kill Policy in 2002, the result
(hopefully short-term) is that many dogs end up
on the street or at the government kennels where
they have a very short time before being euthanased.
These are the dogs that we try to help. Many of
them are crossbreeds or mongrels, some old, some
young, but we also have a lot of purebred dogs
that come up for homing.
Our
belief is that the dog's personality is far more
important that its breed. Many of the dogs sold
in pet shops come from puppy farms where the mothers
are kept in very poor conditions and produce weak
and sickly puppies. Nearly all these purebred
dogs also have genetic defects, and should never
have been used for breeding in the first place.
Local dogs are hardy and strong, with very few
health problems.
Why another homing organisation
when there are already others?
Because
we are small and self-funded, we are able to operate
on a more personal basis than larger organisations.
However, we are not a rival group as we happily
work alongside anyone who can help the animals
(SPCA, LAP, SAA, CAF etc). The main difference
is that we do not ask anyone to join anything,
there are no fees, and the dogs are free. Our
only stipulation is that all dogs MUST be desexed
if it has not already been done. This, and all
other veterinary fees, must be paid by the adopter.
(Obviously, donations are always gratefully received
as we inevitably end up paying for many dogs ourselves).
