Fri 5th Aug: Big Mike and Little Duncan

Mike always has a smile on his lovely face

There was really only one reason why Mike the giant husky waited so long for a home, and that was his size.   You couldn’t say it was his behaviour because he’s such a gentle boy, well behaved and easy to walk, but there aren’t too many homes in Hong Kong willing to take in a very big and hairy dog.  Today was the day that we had all been waiting for when Mike (who has the great new name Pilot) left the heat of Tai Po with his new family, and doesn’t he look happy?

I took another couple of the Whippety Dog puppies over to Ap Lei Chau on their way to a foster home, this time choosing to wait in the van rather than the street or the Homing Centre until they were picked up.  I can’t remember how many litters of this “breed” I’ve had before, but I know it’s been several of them.  I call them Whippeties because they have the same athletic build and sleek flat coat as whippets, although they are slightly bigger in size when fully grown.  I just love these dogs, both for their looks and nature, and I couldn’t resist holding them on my lap for the trip over on the sampan.  Some puppies are too irresistable!

The Whippeties come in an assortment of colour choices

Button-Duncan is determined to get better

I had some older puppies with me who were due their next vaccinations, and while at Acorn I had a look at Button (now Duncan), the poodle puppy who is still hanging on and, dare I say it, looking a bit better than yesterday.  The poor little mite is still having a hard time breathing, but he’s swallowing the hand-fed food even if he won’t eat it by himself.  Every day is a milestone, and that he’s survived so far is cause for cautious optimism.  One thing’s for sure, he’s got a home to go back to where he’ll be loved for the rest of his life, and what can be better than that?
