Thurs 10th Nov: Thanks to the US Navy

I’d already written today’s post but managed to lose it somehow.  Not the best way to start the day, especially after an almost fire during the night when I woke (was woken) to the smell of burning and was trying to find the source.  It (the smoke smell) was at the top of the spiral staircase but there’s nothing electrical there, only (occupied) dog beds.  I went up and down checking out every corner, but the only place where the smell was strong was where I first detected it. Eventually there was a loud bang (of something shorting) and that was the end of it.  This morning I could only suspect the refrigerator that sits at the bottom of the spiral stairs, but it still seemed to be working.  Anyway, I thought dogs were supposed to warn you when there’s a potential fire but no, it was me that woke the dogs when I turned all the lights on (at four in the morning). Useless animals.

Michelle was the only all-black puppy in this litter

I picked Michelle up from Acorn and she seems to be fine after her exploratory surgery, other than the fact that she now won’t leave my side in case I send her to that horrible place again (she thinks).  I hope she won’t eat any more sand or earth, but I’m assuming she will if she did it before.  The only answer is to find her a home, but that’s not easy when she is one of many and all black at that (with a very pretty face though).  She’s the only one of her “Guinea Pig” litter not to have been adopted, and I don’t think there’s any particular reason, only bad luck.

Is Tiger watching or helping?

We had a team of US Navy volunteers up at Tai Po today, and this was their first visit to the site (although we have had teams at Pokfulam in the past).  They are fantastic and willing workers, up for anything like building, lifting, fixing, moving – you name it.  They’re welcome back any time!

Thanks to the whole team

I don’t get up to Tai Po myself nearly as much as I used to, mainly because we have a great team taking care of things and there’s really not the need for me to go.  Still I love to get news of adoptions, and the latest lucky dog was sweet Pebble.  He’s been on the Top 30 list consistently, so now we can cross him off and add another (and there are many, many contenders).

We need a different kind of volunteer on Saturday 19 November for a special evening event.  It’s an ask-no-questions sign-up, you just need to be over eighteen and have a sense of fun (pity the US Navy won’t be in town that day).  Please email volunteers@hongkongdogrescue.com NOW so you can be given details.  You can’t sign up on the day, it has to be in advance!
