Fri 2nd March: RIP puppy Seal

I was just in middle of writing this post when I made the awful discovery that puppy Seal had died. He was lying on the floor and seemed to have simply passed peacefully away. I know you have all followed his story, as have many others, and I’m sure you will be as shocked and upset as I am right now. I have just spoken to Dr Tony who thinks that a congenital blood clotting disorder could be a possible explanation, and I suppose I am relieved that in the end Seal was at my home and not with a new family. Someone had sent me a message about the fact that Seal still hadn’t been adopted despite all of the publicity, saying that it was perhaps a fear that somewhere down the line he might have a relapse of his paralysis that was putting people off. I had never even thought about the possibility but now I can see that was probably true. I don’t know if I’m happy that Seal was with me at the end, or sad that he never found that special home.

I had to take another puppy to Acorn (he had been vomiting) so was somewhat hampered in my movements throughout the day. Even though the puppy is small and was in a little bag, where I could go and what I could do was limited. The fact that he was fooling me into thinking he was sick was a relief, but Ap Lei Chau was the extent of my travels because of him. I’ve been trying to do some minor upgrades to the Homing Centre shop anyway, so while puppy Brutus slept in his bag at the office at the other end of Main Street, I used my time to root through all the stock kept there, carry a load down to the Homing Centre and then arrange it on the (new) shelves. I’m not even sure if people know that we have our own shop at the Homing Centre where we sell just about everything, from Hills Science Diet dog food to all sorts of dog beds (Kuranda and soft), shampoos and lots of toys. What we really need is a volunteer who can be in charge of the retail side of things at Ap Lei Chau – offers anyone?
I’m happy to report that Brutus is fine, and so are the remaining three from the litter that were dying from some acute mystery cause. Whatever it was seems to have been knocked on the head by all the medicines but it still means they can’t go to any of the puppy adoption afternoons until next weekend. Never mind, I have plenty of others including the baby sharpeis who will be at Stanley this afternoon (Saturday).
