Mon 9th April: Last official day of Easter

I went up to our main Homing Centre today to catch up with May and talk about the renovations that are in the pipeline, most importantly improved shade and shelter for the enclosures. My visits to the Tai Po office aren’t easy, and it’s nothing to do with getting there (thanks to the van) but the over-enthusiastic greeting I get from the dogs, particularly Nattie who was an ex-Lamma puppy and wants me to remember her. Thanks Nattie, but it hurts! I had a peek at the mother dog and her babies, and all are doing well although I think mother (Whitney) is getting bored with having to stay in and look after her brood. We’ll slowly introduce her to the other dogs, but for now they have to be kept away when she needs a toilet break and wants to leave the nursery (shower room).
We have to work out what we will do with and for the dogs that are now at the breeders as they are almost all large sized and in varying degrees of health. The story about this place has been developing and I won’t say more until the dogs are safe, but it’s complicated. Right now all I know is that there are pairs – male and female – of rottweiler, borzoi, whippet, Irish and red setters, Sheltie and some mixes who ended up there somehow, around thirty in total. That’s too many for us to be able to accomodate in one go so we are in urgent need of homes or fosters. It’s not a good time to be asking as many have extended the Easter holidays until this coming weekend, but there must be a few who would be interested in these dogs.
Harris the corgi had been waiting a long time at our Ap Lei Chau Centre, but finally today was his turn to leave for his new home. He’s a lovely dog and he has lots of volunteer fans, and as always there have been a lot of ‘goodbye and good luck’ comments posted on Facebook. I love reading them all and knowing how much the dogs are loved, whether at Tai Po or Ap Lei Chau, and it’s even better when the adopters add updates to let us all know how the dogs are doing.
I was very happy to get news and photos of Yam and Custer, and to know that both are settling in and are happy with their respective new “sisters”. Now I have to work on a home for Sophie, a funny, lovely and sweet girl who surely must be exactly right for one family out there.
