Weds 23rd May: Sandy’s missing hours

I was so scared something terrible had happened to Sandy

Despite her age, my little dog (a terrier cross of sorts) Sandy is always right up there with the big dogs on our daily walk, and even though I suspect she’s nearly blind and probably deaf too, it doesn’t stop her from jumping over rocks or doing anything else that the others do.  Even on the way home when the dogs are tired and panting, Sandy’s leading the way, even taking detours into the woods if there’s something interesting that catches her attention.  When we get back home the dogs get fed, and then rest for the afternoon while I’m out (or not, as the case may be).  The special dogs, that is Sandy, Murphy, Inky and Holly, are fed separately in a small room, but today Sandy didn’t appear for her lunch.  Sometimes she’ll head off to the beach after the walk so I wasn’t too worried at first, and spent some time giving one of my long-haired dogs, Marnie, a shave before going outside to see if Sandy was back.  She wasn’t, so I went back into the woods and then to the quarry, thinking that is she had fallen into one of the storm drains that criss-cross the area, she could have followed the course downwards.  These drains are like a maze and there are miles of them, literally death traps for a small dog.  With still no sign of Sandy I was starting to get really worried, and after going back home to see if she’s returned (no) , I packed up some water and a bowl and went back into the woods to retrace the entire walk we’d done earlier.  I spotted her before she saw me, and actually I don’t think she saw me at all  (confirming her poor eyesight), and even when I called her she was confused about where I was (so yes, she’s pretty deaf too), but finally she worked it out and came running towards me.  She’d been out for a good few hours by then and was happy for the drink of water, but not as happy as I was to see her and to give her a big cuddle.  Of course, being the amazing character she is, she shrugged off any thought of a fuss, had something to eat and settled down for her usual afternoon nap.

Thank you TVB, their artists Kayee & Sheldon, May and volunteer Ellen who were interviewed! Will let you know when the show is out

So that was pretty much my day, although others were busy of course.  We had TVB at Tai Po filming for a TV show, and there was also a deadline to meet for the applications for the next round of the Li Ka Shing “Love Ideas HK” grant, something I’m sure every organisation has been busy with.  Thanks to our General Manager, Linda, I don’t have to do too much with this type of thing other than throw in my thoughts and opinions then leave it up to her to do the rest.

Assuming our application is successful, voting opens June 18 2012 and will continue until July 8 2012.

I'm so happy that Judith was chosen today

One of my long-ago Lamma puppies, Judith, was adopted today and has gone to join another ex-Lamma dog called Rocco.  I love it when the dog chosen is one that has entirely escaped previous notice, so Judith’s adoption was an extra special surprise.

New boy Gatsby is waiting for a home at Ap Lei Chau. Isn't he gorgeous?
