Sat 2nd June: 4 back, 2 out

I have to admit that I’d completely forgotten that three foster pups (Constance’s babies) needed to be collected from their temporary home today, so it was just as well in a way that Trinidad, the puppy with a broken leg, was being returned after her foster family (well the son actually) found that it was all too much for him to cope with after just one night.  I suppose it’s better that parents find out this way that their child’s pleas for a puppy, and promises to take care of it, are really more of a fantasy than a reality.  Children shouldn’t be given the responsibility of taking care of a dog or puppy as it’s really asking too much of them.  Of course they can help and learn, but ultimately it’s always the parents who will be left holding the “baby”.

Chica in her previous home. How she would love to have a sofa to share again.

So while Hing, the van driver, went off to collect the returning three from Tai Tam, I jumped on a sampan to go over to Ap Lei Chau to bring the four pups back to Lamma.  At least it gave me the chance to meet recently surrendered Chica who had been sent from Tai Po to meet a potential adopter (interview was over very quickly as Chica was declared “too big”).  She had been adopted from HKDR as a puppy back in Pokfulam days but due to the owner’s serious health problems she, and schnauzer Lily (since adopted), were taken in.  I can’t say I remember Chica because she is now obviously an adult and not the puppy that left three years ago, but she is the sweetest dog.  For anyone looking for a young but grown up dog, great with children and other dogs, calm and affectionate, then Chica should be top of your list.

I also had a chance to see the new shih tzu/terrier boys that had been brought to the Homing Centre yesterday, and they’re just gorgeous.  I love those “Ewok” faces, and as this pair (of brothers?) are still very young I don’t expect them to be with us for long.

The new boys have names now: Bilbo and Frodo

Another Ewok that left us today was Gatsby, the cute-as-a-button shih tzu boy.  His adopter had also recently taken one of our shih tzu girls, Roma, so we know that Gatsby has a great home and a built-in sister (I hope she likes him!)

It's hard for older dogs at Tai Po so we're always happy when they leave

It’s never really much of a surprise when golden retrievers are adopted as they have to be the most popular breed on the planet, and Leo didn’t have to spend long at Tai Po before being chosen.  He’s not a young dog so it’s lovely that he can now enjoy the comforts that every dog deserves.

What can you say about this wonderful photo of love?

The photographer, Jo Lyons, that came to Tai Po on Friday posted some of her photos on her Facebook page, and I just have to share these shots of Candy with Jo’s husband, Neal.  Obviously Candy had never met Neal before but just look at the love she has to share.  She has been with us for some time now, and is just one of the many dogs who would make such wonderful family members but who are overlooked time and time again.  I don’t understand why this happens, especially as Candy is such a pretty dog too, easily as good looking as any golden retriever.
